Guide · AI agents

What is an AI agent, and what can it do for a business?

An AI agent is software that is given a goal and works toward it on its own: it plans steps, uses tools such as email, a CRM or a browser, checks the results and decides what to do next. A chatbot answers questions, and an automation follows fixed steps. An agent chooses its own steps, which suits work that varies from case to case.

01 · Definition

A goal, tools and a loop

Three parts make an agent. A language model that reasons about the task. Tools it may use, such as search, email, a calendar or a database. And a loop: act, look at the result, decide the next step, until the goal is met or a person is needed.

Anthropic, the company behind the Claude models, draws the line this way: workflows are systems where models and tools follow predefined code paths, while agents direct their own process and their use of tools.

02 · Chatbot, automation, agent

Three things often all called AI

A chatbot answers in a conversation. A scripted one follows a menu and an AI one understands free questions, but both stop at the reply. An automation runs fixed steps when something happens, such as adding every new lead to the CRM. An agent is given a job and decides the steps.

Good systems mix them: fixed automation where the path is known, an agent where it is not, and a chat or voice assistant where customers talk.

03 · Agentic AI

AI agents and agentic AI

Agentic AI names the approach: systems that act instead of only answering. An AI agent is one such system doing one job. Both terms are used loosely, so ask any vendor what the thing does on its own and what waits for a person.

04 · Examples

Examples for businesses in Dubai

A brokerage agent that collects missing documents from buyers on WhatsApp and files them to the deal. A clinic agent that checks bookings against the calendar and sends reminders. A trading company agent that turns emailed orders into draft invoices for approval. A founder’s agent that triages the inbox and prepares meeting briefings.

Each does a narrow job, logs what it did and hands over when it is unsure.

05 · Limits

What agents still get wrong

Agents can misread a task, follow instructions hidden in an email or a document, and sound confident when they are wrong. Useful agents therefore have narrow permissions, an approval step for anything costly and tests on real past cases before they run.

Questions, answered.

What does AI agent mean?

An AI agent is software that takes a goal and works toward it by planning steps and using tools, instead of only answering a question.

Is ChatGPT an AI agent?

In a normal chat, ChatGPT is an assistant that answers. Its agent features, which browse and take steps toward a task, are agents in the sense of this guide.

What are some examples of AI agents?

Inbox triage, document collection, lead qualification, report preparation, booking and rescheduling, and research that gathers sources into a brief. The examples above show what these look like in Dubai businesses.

Are AI agents safe to use with company data?

They can be, when they run in your accounts with the narrowest permissions, logged actions and model provider settings that keep your data out of training. Ask for each of these in writing.
